“Life comes at us in waves. We can’t predict or control those waves, but we can learn to surf.”
—Dan Millman, Author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior
Happy New Year and welcome to a brand-new decade! It’s an exciting time to be alive and in business—and equally chaotic.
We opened with the Dan Millman quote for a reason. There’s probably no better piece of wisdom to impart at the outset of 2020 than that which is carried in the above words. Contemplate them for a moment and consider their meaning.
When a surfer enters the water, they must first paddle out to the breaking point before they can even hope to catch a wave. They can’t do that by fighting the incoming crashes or trying to jump over them. They accept the waves as inevitable and dipper underneath them as they push ahead. Once they’re beyond the choppy waters, their success once again comes not from struggling against the current, but from moving with it and harnessing its power.
Hold onto this thought as you weather the coming year. We can never know what the future holds. We can speculate on what we see and prepare for the probabilities, but beyond that, we can only maneuver the ever-changing tide as it comes.
Thank you for continuing to turn to HQ for the information that matters to you and your livelihood. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the industry we call home and look forward to yet another year of highlighting the best that this incredible space has to offer.
Merry Holidays and a happy New Year to you, dear reader. We sincerely hope the season is one filled with joy and celebration and you manage to find some downtime somewhere between the Christmas rush and closing inventory.
But let’s move past the pleasantries. There’s a new year coming, and with it, big changes on the horizon. If you’ve yet to come up with your resolution, that’s OK. We have it for you: to pay attention. It may be more important now than ever. Here are a few reasons why: Read More
Legalization is imminent. We said the same thing last year, but with each passing day, the estimated time frame shrinks further from years and closer to months. Congress is barely hanging onto the status quo of prohibition, and only by virtue of a few well-placed drug warriors clinging to power. Every presidential candidate in the field, save one, is in full favor of legalization. Biden is the odd one out, a fact that should give pause to liberals looking to him as their savior from the current administration. Hard decisions may have to be made, but equally important will be your strategy for navigating the coming change.
Brick and mortars are on life support. It’s no secret, and as much of a buzzkill it is to print such truth in a magazine dedicated to a brick and mortar niche, it’s our job to relay the facts. Small business are running on the fumes of ideological millennials. God bless them for those ideals, but survival will require more than goodwill alone. It’ll be up to you to determine how you will stay relevant. Will you pivot or fight the inevitable?
Psychedelics are making a comeback. In May of this year, Denver became the first city in the nation to decriminalize psilocybin, AKA, “magic mushrooms.” Now, several other cities are attempting to follow suit. Could this be the next wave of legalization? Possible, and perhaps even probable. Multiple studies legitimizing the therapeutic value of a variety of psychedelics our now pouring through and normalizing the substances in the minds of Americans. It’s not time to break out the spore kits just yet, but considering our traditional role, it may be wise to keep an open ear to possibilities.
Federal hemp regulations are coming. This is by far, the most pertinent development to follow. Mere days before we went to press, the USDA released their proposed regulations for the hemp industry. By the time this issue is in your hands, we’ll be mere weeks away from the closing of the 60-day comment period before it becomes law. Considering how integral hemp-derived CBD products have become within our market, we’ll need all hands on deck to steer this ship.
Stay alert, folks. If you want to keep thriving in 202, you need to see 2020.
